In 1888 Edison started creating a movie camera. However his first attempt needed many improvements because it was hard to focus. He later improved his camera by using celluloid film which made the pictures clearer. Edison's movie studio was called The Black Maria. He filmed short movies which people could view through a device called the kinetoscope. A few years later in 1895 Edison combined his movie camera with Thomas Armat's projector which took film-making to a new level. Now Edison could show his movies on a larger scale in theaters. His movies led him to recieve the first honorary Oscar. Without the movie camera, the economy would not be the same today because the film industry employs 2.4 million people and brings $180 billion anually to the nation.
