Edison was developing a telephone transmitter in 1877 when he came up with the idea of recording and playing back telephone messages. He invented the phonograph which recorded sound as indentations on a paraffin-coated sheet of paper. The stylus under the paper created the marks which allowed for the sounds to be reproduced. The phonograph was Edison's first invention and as a result the press started to call him "the Wizard of Menlo Park"
